Playwork is an alternative                              approach to working with children in their leisure time. The practice of playwork was invented by the UK adventure playground pioneers and playwork is now recognised as a distinct profession in the UK. PARS is the first holistic model to describe and define playwork practice and is now being used by over 1000 practitioners working in a range of settings in eight different countries.

Playwork publications

Originally set up in 2002 to develop playwork training, Common Threads also became a publisher when other publishers wouldn’t publish playwork materials as the market just wasn’t big enough. Twenty years on and several publishers now happily support playwork publication, and Common Threads has actively worked with several of these larger publishers to encourage this, such as the Routledge Advances in Playwork Research series and International Journal of Playwork Practice. We also still publish our own playwork publications, from practical guides to re-publishing historical adventure playground literature. Take a look at our eclectic collection of unique playwork resources, and do get in touch if you would like us to publish your playwork publication!

Playwork research

Led by Dr Shelly Newstead, Common Threads creates and disseminates new playwork knowledge by developing and supporting playwork research. We push the boundaries of playwork knowledge in several different directions, from developing empirical studies about key aspects of playwork theory and practice to involving academics from other disciplines and supporting playwork practitioners in accessing and developing research. Common Threads publishes International Journal of Playwork Practice, the first ever peer-reviewed playwork journal and also works with other publishers to support playwork research.
