IJPP Mini-Seminar – March 19TH

The seventh annual IJPP research seminar was due to be held in Australia in 2020, but was postponed due to Covid-19. In the meantime, we will be hosting a ‘mini-seminar’ on Friday, 19th March 2021, 7-9.30pm (UK time). Entitled UK Playwork in the pandemic – what research tells us about practice’, this event will feature four presenters from the UK discussing their playwork research and practice response to the current pandemic:

Get In Touch

Freya Howard – The Child and Playwork in Covid-19

An interactive exploration of the changing attitudes and practicalities of playwork through the first UK Covid-19 lockdown. Reflecting on a child’s need for play, discussing the practical routes, discoveries and the playworker’s role at this time of global uncertainty focusing on one setting.

Dr Pete King, Swansea University – Researching Playwork in the Pandemic

Since the first national lockdown in March 2020, many UK playwork settings, including adventure playgrounds, after-school clubs and holiday playschemes, have had to close, suspend delivery or change the focus of the provision.  This presentation will outline a developing longitudinal study involving those working in adventure playgrounds and out-of-school provision on the impact of Covid-19 and how they are responding to re-opening post the first lockdown.

Clare Freeman, Director, Out of School Alliance – Viability of out of school clubs in the time of Covid.

We conducted a survey of our members in May and November 2020 to gain an understanding on how many out of school clubs have been able to operate since the first lockdown in March 2020, and the financial impacts and organisational issues that they are facing. In our talk we will be presenting the results of these surveys and looking at what this means for the future of out of school clubs.

Open to anyone with an interest in playwork, this will be a free event hosted online via Zoom. To receive the Zoom link, just contact us and let us know that you would like to join, or email ijpp@commonthreads.org.uk.
